Membranes: Eunsu Kang: Emerging Technologies Lab – Bierce Library 3|19- 3|28

[Membranes]

Membranes is an interactive space consisting of video projection and spatialized sound. The participant submerges into this imaginary water-filled space as if they are “swimming” in an “ocean.” As they traverse a distance of some meters, they move through three invisible membranes. Passing through each of them, participants experience themselves transforming into water-filled bodies and then dissolving into this “ocean.” The Membranes project is not only an interactive installation but also an interactive dance performance. The dancer interacts with the crowd and dives into the interactive space, where she becomes waves of the “ocean.”

Eunsu Kang is an international media artist from Korea. She creates interactive spaces that embrace people, penetrate them, and transform using interactive video, spatialized sound, site-specific installation and performing art idioms. Creating interdisciplinary projects, her signature has been seamless integration of art disciplines and innovative techniques. Her work has been invited to numerous places around the world including Japan, China, Switzerland, Sweden, France, Germany, and the US. All nine of her solo shows, consisting of individual or collaborative projects, were invited or awarded. She has won the Korean National Grant for Arts three times. Her researches have been presented at conferences such as ACM, ICMC and ISEA. Kang earned her Ph.D. in Digital Arts and Experimental Media from DXARTS at the University of Washington. spectacle

The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term New Media within the design practice and fine arts.

The theme for Collider :: C4 this year is spectacle.

spectacle refers to an event that is memorable for the appearance it creates.

Spectacle operates in two contexts simultaneously. On the one hand, it refers to high culture (drama, movies) performances where the draw for an audience is the impressive visual accomplishment. On the other hand, it refers to low cultural shows operating in a folk environment. These can range from the freak show to folk drama to tableau and beast-plays.
