Ambient Vision: Yuan-Yi Fan: EDG KINECT Cube – 03 | 29 – 03 | 31

[Ambient Vision]

Ambient Vision is an interactive audiovisual installation that addresses interplay between human perception and physiological responses. The interactive experience in Ambient Vision is driven by 3D point cloud from a Kinect sensor and real-time heart rate data from a custom biometric iPhone app. Ambient Vision explores visual and sonic representations of continuous interplay between the system and participants. Participants can experience Ambient Vision by walking freely within the Kinect sensing range while holding index finger against iPhone camera for heart rate data acquisition.

Yuan-Yi Fan studied computer music, media art, and multimedia engineering in Media Arts & Technology at University of California Santa Barbara. His research investigates collective expression by creating systems that augment audience participation and multimodal interactivity. His creative practice has evolved from new interfaces for musical expression, to audiovisual analysis/synthesis/spatialization techniques, to creative music information retrieval applications. He designed and developed natural user interfaces and connected device experiences at startup and research center based in Los Angeles. Before UCSB, he built MEMS ultrasound array transducers in Taiwan.

The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term New Media within the design practice and fine arts.

The theme for Collider :: C4 this year is spectacle.

spectacle refers to an event that is memorable for the appearance it creates.

Spectacle operates in two contexts simultaneously. On the one hand, it refers to high culture (drama, movies) performances where the draw for an audience is the impressive visual accomplishment. On the other hand, it refers to low cultural shows operating in a folk environment. These can range from the freak show to folk drama to tableau and beast-plays.
