Ambient Vision: Yuan-Yi Fan: EDG KINECT Cube – 03 | 29 – 03 | 31

[Ambient Vision]

Ambient Vision is an interactive audiovisual installation that addresses rippled mental images as the product of perceived external stimulus and internal bodily responses.

The audiovisual representation that audience experience in Ambient Vision is reconstructed and synthesized in real time based on 3D information from Kinect sensor and modulated by heart rate data from custom biometric iphone app. Ambient Vision explores artistic and aural representation of the rippled mental images. Audience experience Ambient Vision by situating themselves within the sensing range of Kinect sensor and transmitting their heart rate data using iPhone app to the server via WiFi.

Yuan-Yi Fan (b. 1982 in Tainan, Taiwan) is a multimedia artist and creative technologist. As a multimedia artist, his works explore forms and multimodal representation for patterns in cardiovascular signals, as well as the use of biometrics in media arts that reflects dehumanizing technology and emotional modulation of perception. As a creative technologist, he designs multimodal interactive application, as well as creates transformative tools that enable new research modality in media and communication studies. He is a PhD Candidate of Media Arts and Technology at University of California Santa Barbara USA and graduated with a MS in Biomedical Engineering from National Yang Ming Medical College and BS in Mechanical and Electro-Mechanical Engineering from National Sun Yat-Sen University, both in Taiwan.

Yuan-Yi Fan’s “Form of Resonance Series – I : BioRhythm” addresses frequency relation of harmonic pulse spectrum by exploring audiovisual representation of patterns with controversial interpretations. His publications and works have been exhibited, presented, and performed at NIME, Mindshare L.A., Design Principles and Practices, and UCSB’s CREATE Concert.

The Collider Exhibition Series examines the impact, implications and inspiration of the phenomenon generally categorized under the umbrella term New Media within the design practice and fine arts.

The theme for Collider :: C4 this year is spectacle.

spectacle refers to an event that is memorable for the appearance it creates.

Spectacle operates in two contexts simultaneously. On the one hand, it refers to high culture (drama, movies) performances where the draw for an audience is the impressive visual accomplishment. On the other hand, it refers to low cultural shows operating in a folk environment. These can range from the freak show to folk drama to tableau and beast-plays.
